There’s no accounting for taste.

「人の好みは分からないものだね」「好みは人それぞれ」は英語で：

There’s no accounting for taste.

と言います。

 

❶　「taste」はここでは名詞で「趣味・センス」という意味です。

たとえば

He has good taste.
（趣味がいい）

He has bad taste.
（センスが悪い）

We have the same taste in music.
（音楽の趣味は一緒だね）

 

❷　「account for ~」は「説明がつく」「原因が分かる」という意味です。

たとえば

That accounts for the drop in sales.
（売上の減少はそれで説明がつくね）

We can’t account for the drop in sales.
（売上が減った原因は分からない）

 

❸　「There’s no ~」は「〜がない」という意味ですけど、このように「動詞ing」も続けることも多い。

たとえば

There’s no milk.
（牛乳がない）

There’s no comparison.
（比べ物にならない）

There’s no smoking here.
（ここは禁煙です）

There’s no denying it.
（否定はできない）

There’s no turning back now.
（もう後戻りはできない）
