❶　「in the first place」は「元々」という意味の英語です。

たとえば

I wanted to go in the first place.
（元々行きたかった）

I didn't want to go in the first place.
（元々行きたくなかった）

I thought that in the first place.
（元々そう思っていた）

I wasn't hungry in the first place.
（元々お腹が空いてなかった）

❷　「first」「at first」「in the first place」はそれぞれ違う意味なので使い分けましょう！

・「first」は「先に」「最初に」

・「at first」は「最初は」「初めは」

・「in the first place」は「元々」

たとえば

I was nervous first.
（私が先に緊張した）

I was nervous at first.
（最初は緊張した）

I was nervous in the first place.
（元々緊張していた）

I liked him first.
（私が先に好きになった）

I liked him at first.
（最初は好きだった）

I liked him in the first place.
（元々好きだった）
