「get the wrong idea」は「誤解する」という意味です。
たとえば
Don’t get the wrong idea.
（誤解しないでね）
I didn’t mean to lead him on but he got the wrong idea.
（気を持たせるつもりはなかったけど彼が誤解しちゃった）
逆に「誤解を与える」は「give 人 the wrong idea」と言います。
たとえば
That will give him the wrong idea.
（それは彼に誤解を与えてしまうだろう）
I didn’t mean to give him the wrong idea.
（彼にわざと誤解を与えたわけじゃない）
