「show 人's true colors」という英語は「本当の色を見せる」という直訳ですが、
「本性を表す」という意味の熟語です。
悪い意味で使うのが一般的です。
たとえば、
I thought she was my friend but she showed her true colors by badmouthing me behind my back.
（彼女が友達だと思っていたのに、私の陰口をして本性を表した）
People show their true colors in a crisis.
（人は危機時に本性を表すものだ）
