どうしたら状況をよくできるのかな？
How can we better the situation?
「状況をよくする」は「better the situation」と言います。
なんと「better」が動詞として使われています！
たとえば
I think we can better the situation.
（状況をよくできると思う）
I’m just trying to better my situation.
（自分の状況をよくしようとしているだけだ）
そして「situation」以外にも色々使えますが、どんなものでもいいというわけじゃないところがちょっとネックです。
better my chances
（可能性を高める）
better my understanding
（理解を深める）
better myself
（自己啓発する）
は使いますが、「better our sales」「better my salary」などは言いません。
たとえば
How can I better my chances of getting the job?
（採用される可能性をどうやって高めればいいのかな？）
I want to better my understanding of the issue.
（この問題に関する自分の理解を深めたい）
I’m trying to better myself.
（自己啓発に励んでいる）
そして、「by ~ing（~することで）」を付け加えて応用することが多いです。
たとえば
We can better the situation by finding out what people need.
（みんなのニーズを知ることで状況をよくできる）
They could’ve bettered the situation by being honest.
（正直に話すことで状況をよくできたのにな）
You could better your chances of getting the job by learning more about the industry.
（業界に詳しくなることで採用される可能性が高くなるんじゃない？）
I bettered my understanding of the issue by reading lots of different opinions.
（いろんな意見を読むことでこの問題に関する理解を深めた）
